On March 9, two dozen intrepid golfers braved the uncertainties of the weather to take a whack at night golf after two failed attempts due to the damp and chill of our coldest winter in half a century. Thanks to global warming we did get a great night to test out the dark of Countryway Golf Club.
Bill Sherlock and his staff prepared the course with glow sticks on the tee boxes, on the flagsticks, in the holes and in the fairways on the longer shots. Each golfer was given translucent ball and an inactivated glow stick that you needed to break like a cyanide capsule and insert into the ball being careful to strike it sideways so you didn’t knock the stick out of the ball.(You almost thought I was going to say knock something else out of the ball but there was little chance of that).Oh yeah, we each got to wear a glow stick ‘necklace’ to try and prevent us from hitting balls at each other – that plan failed miserably.
In all it was kind of like playing golf on the set of ET with glowing objects flying all over the place, floating glowing objects in the ponds when they failed to properly follow the runway lights on the course, and eerily glowing holes as you approached the pin that seemed to repel even the purest putt.Adding to the suspense was the cackle of faceless disembodied laughter all over the course coming somewhere from the floating halos around necks and on heads.
But you didn’t have to ask if folks had a good time you just had to listen and watch the smiles in the clubhouse as we got back. This is a keeper event and one you will not want to miss next time.It was competitive and here are our winners:
